I fully support and approve my child’s participation in the Barbara Ingram Summer Arts Academy. I agree to comply and abide by all Academy and Camp rules and regulations. I further agree that the Summer Arts Academy and the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Foundation, Inc. has my permission to take photographic images and audio and video recording of my child during the camp. I further consent to and authorize the Summer Arts Academy and the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts Foundation, Inc. to use and reproduce any such photographic images and audio and video recordings and to circulate and publicize the same by all means, including but not limited to, newspaper and other print media, television media, brochures, pamphlets, marketing materials, and websites for future advertising or the Academy and/or the Foundation. I also assume and accept full financial responsibility for any and all health care cost included but not limited to, the cost of medication, first aid, x-rays, lab work, hospitalization, and other medical care or service that arises during the camp.

Refund Information

You may cancel your application for the Summer Arts Academy and receive a refund (less $25.00 non-refundable administrative processing fee) only if the request for cancellation is made at least four (4) weeks prior to the opening of that camp session. No money will be refunded for any reason after the above-referenced four (4) week deadline. Students arriving late for camp or leaving early will not be eligible for monetary compensation or refund. If you are placed on a “waiting list” and do not attend the Summer Arts Academy, your deposit will be returned.

Clarinet and Saxophone Academy*

Barbara Ingram School for the Arts and the Maryland Wind Festival are excited to collaborate and welcome single reed players for a NEW Summer Clarinet and Saxophone Academy! Come and learn with the Maryland Wind Festival's talented Artist Faculty -- This class will develop fundamental skills including embouchure a tone production, musicianship, practice strategies, and performance techniques on solo and ensemble music in a musically fulfilling, supportive environment. Players of all levels will benefit from the techniques covered at our Summer Clarinet and Saxophone Academy!

Dance Academy

This Program is designed to give students the opportunity to study a wide range of dance styles. The diverse styles of dance will include jazz, hip-hop, modern, ballet, lyrical, improvisation and composition. On the first day of class, students will be evaluated and placed in the appropriate level of study.

Flute Academy

We are excited to welcome all flutists for engaging and fun lessons, and ensemble experiences at its Summer Flute Academy! We will develop our skills from basics to advanced techniques as we play together and individually! We will cover everything from breathing and tone to sight reading and ensemble tuning in an exciting and enriching environment. All skill levels are welcomed! Beginners and advanced players alike will benefit from all the techniques covered at our Flute Academy! Please, join us for a week of wonderful growing experiences!

“Pen or Sword: Choose Your Weapon” Academy*

Students will learn basic playwriting and stage combat techniques: characterization, story arc, how to build conflict, and how to throw a safe punch! Students will finish the week with a short two-person scene culminating in a staged fight. Ideal for physically-oriented students with active imaginations.

Piano Academy (Class Size Limit 10)

This academy is designed for students who have had 3 or more years of traditional piano study and are proficient in reading music. Student should be familiar with piano technique and musical ideas. There will be emphasis on refining technique and learning more detailed methods of practice and performance; building upon technique and musical concepts. Students should have at least 30 minutes of daily practice time at home. Activities include but not limited to music and movement; repertoire; master classes; ensembles; piano technique; sight reading; ear training; effective practice strategies and use of the electronic keyboard lab.

Cardboard Sculpting Academy*

Students will be creating a sculpture out of an abundant “found material” called cardboard. Students will explore the variety of forms and textures this simple material has to offer. The subject matter will focus on everyday objects. We will be seeking the “magic/beauty in the mundane.” Students will explore their talent and be able to have a piece to take home at the end of the week.

Vocal Academy

The Vocal Academy provides students with a comprehensive experience in all facets of the vocal art. This academy emphasizes choral singing as well as experiences in solo vocal performance. Singers will have the opportunity to study with Barbara Ingram Vocal Faculty in private lessons and master class settings, as well as sing in a choral setting. In an effort to create an authentic Barbara Ingram experience, students will receive instruction in music theory, audition preparation, and other electives. Singers will have numerous opportunities to perform during academy, with a culminating performance for family and friends on the final day. The Barbara Ingram Vocal Music Academy promises to be a thrilling experience! Students should come to class with at least one solo selection learned (with accompanying sheet music for the accompanist).

Band Academy

Each day students will be involved in working on the fundamentals of music making which include; embouchure position, tone production, and facility. In addition to these, students will also be using computer programs to help them improvise, write and arrange music for their instrument. Finally, students will be watching YouTube videos of performances by various soloists or ensembles on their instrument to guide and inspire them.

Guitar Academy

This Academy is for beginning to intermediate guitar students wishing to gain or grow their guitar skills. Students will learn the fundamentals of guitar such as tuning, technique, chords and melodic playing in a variety of styles. If new to the guitar, it is strongly recommended that students enter the class with at least 1 year of musical study on another instrument. A limited number of guitars are available for use during class.

Introduction to Acting Academy

The Introduction to Acting Academy will teach the fundamentals of performing on stage. This will include technique, stage presence, and scene study. They will be coached in acting, voice and movement. Students will perform their scene or monologue on the last day to family and friends in the Black Box Theatre.

Photography Academy (Class Size Limit 10) *

This academy is for all those interested in learning the craft of black and white film photography and making your own black and white prints in the darkroom. Previous camera experience is not necessary, and we will provide a 35mm SLR camera and film, which can be used if you do not have your own. By the end of the week you will have learned to use a film camera, develop black and white film, and make black and white silver bromide prints in the darkroom, as well as gaining an appreciation of the historical significance of film photography.

Shakespeare for Kids Academy: “Who’s Afraid of The Big Bad Bard?”*

Kids will discover the major themes, plots, and characters of Shakespearean play by performing a version that is “kid friendly.” Through theatre games, acting classes, test analysis, and performances, students will develop an understanding of Shakespeare’s language. The Academy will culminate with a performance of one of Shakespeare’s works.

Visual Arts Academy

The Visual Arts Academy is intended to allow students to explore various mediums and techniques in drawing, painting and print making. Emphasis will be placed on individual creative expression. Students will also explore the use of the principles and elements of design while learning to create a portfolio.
