LITERARY ARTS SUMMIT FEATURES A PANEL OF NOTED WRITERS

 

Mark June 27^th on your calendars for the 3^rd Annual Literary Arts Summit to be held once again in the Black Box Theatre at The Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.

 

This year’s panel includes James Grady, journalist and author of Six Days of the Condor (which was adapted into the Robert Redford movie); Maggie-Kate Coleman, a Hagerstown native (now a New Yorker) who wrote the book and lyrics for the award-winning musical POP!;  writer-actor Dale Stein, who earned Helen Hayes Award Nominations for Best New Play and for Lead Actress for her one-person play, A Fresh of Breath Air; and Harry Bagdasian, a writer-director who co-founded both New Playwrights’ Theatre and The League of Washington Theatres, and who produced the Inaugural Helen Hayes Awards at The National Theatre in Washington.

 

The yearly Summit features noted writers in and around the area.  Among previous presenters were such noted writers as Peter Stitt, editor of the Gettysburg Review; Tim Wendel, journalist and author of fiction (Castro’s Curveball) and narrative nonfiction (High Heat; Summer of ’68); and Tony Mendez, whose book Argo was adapted into the Oscar-winning movie.

 

The program will run from 6:15-8:30 p.m., with a brief intermission.  Admission is free.

Rob Hovermale, Washington County Public Schools’ supervisor of visual and performing arts, has been named the next principal for the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, school system officials said.

Hovermale said he will start his new job June 1, working with current principal Michael Thorsen, who plans to retire at the end of June.

“I’m all excited. … It’s going to be great to get back into a school again and be part of a whole school culture,” Hovermale said Wednesday.

Hovermale, 49, of Smithsburg, has worked for the school system for 23 years.

He has been in the arts supervisory position for about 10 years. He said he was the band director at E. Russell Hicks Middle School during the 1990s.

Hovermale is a “gifted and talented artist himself and so we knew that Rob could come in and take that side of the house over, but Rob is also an academic. He’s somebody who understands instruction, so he can help with the instructional side,” Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said.

Wilcox said Hovermale also has great relationships with organizations such as The Maryland Theatre and museums, sites where students could exhibit their works.

The downtown Hagerstown arts school, which opened in 2009, had 258 students at the start of the school year. The high school offers dance, instrumental music, theater, visual arts, vocal music and literary arts.

The school system had 32 applicants for the job, school system officials said in April.

The job was advertised nationally, with a regional focus, Wilcox said.

The Carsons Scholars Fund has announced the Washington County students for 2013. Congratulations to Julia Martirano, grade 11, Musical Theatre student at Barbara Ingram School for the Arts. Julia will receive a $1000 college scholarship award and the honor of being named a Carson scholar. The 17th annual awards banquet will be held on Sunday, April 7 at Martin’s West in Woodlawn, Maryland. This is the first time scholar award for Julia.

WATCH THIS!!! Blues Fest 2013 Poster Artist is a BISFA Student!

 

The artwork that will represent this year’s 18th Annual Western Maryland Blues Fest was crafted by Erin Mettille, a senior at the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts! Erin’s piece was selected by the Blues Fest Committee out of 48 submissions – the largest response in the history of the contest

The Thomas L. Law Visual Arts Scholarship was established by his wife Sandra who said ” The person for whom this scholarship was named went to art school because of the generosity of another and that training made a large impact on his life”.  This year two visual art scholarships will be chosen by a committee to attend the Summer Art Academy Visual Arts camp from July 29-August 1, 2013.
